Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
