The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
